What exactly is WebWalk?
WebWalk is the new standard for interactive experiences via the Internet. It can be described as a combination of the realism of a video, with the interactivity of a video game. By allowing users to fully explore a location remotely, WebWalk removes many of the logical obstacles around planning, discovery and entertainment . With WebWalk, one can go places they may never be able to go. The ability to make purchases inside of WebWalk truly completes the experience and gives one a true feeling of “being there.” It was developed by NeuStep as a solution to the limitations of standard virtual tour technology.
How is WebWalk different from a traditional virtual tour?
WebWalk has many benefits over traditional virtual tour technology. It's interactive "walking" interface gives the viewer a sense of "being there." Its seamlessly stitched images allows for fluent travel throughout a location, rather than having to merely "jump-to" fixed spots as in traditional tours. The viewer controls the navigation of where to go in a WebWalk. It combines the realism of video with the beauty and simplicity of photography. Furthermore, WebWalk solves the limitation of depth perception in a 2D medium, which makes it useful in a variety of industries unserved by traditional virtual tour technology, such as aviation, nautical, and public safety.
Why not just use video?
Video is a great passive tool, but lacks interactivity. A WebWalk simulates first-person experience, like a video, but adds the ability to stop or change vantage points at any point, as if you were actually there. Because WebWalk is an active tool, it cultivates involvement from the end-user resulting in a more personal online experience. Also, websites that feature WebWalk content increase the amount of time an end-user will stay on a website and sub-pages.
Is WebWalk the same as Google Streetview?
WebWalk and Google Streetview are completely different technologies. Streetview focuses only on public roads, while WebWalk is typically used anywhere but public roads. Parks, outdoor shopping centers, and golf courses are examples of outdoor locations served by WebWalk. WebWalk is primarily used for indoor locations such as homes, restaurants, and night clubs. WebWalk was not developed as a competitor to Streetview, but believes the technologies compliment one another very well.
Do I need any special plug-ins to view WebWalk?
WebWalk is based on the Adobe Flash standard, which is installed on 99% of computers worldwide. This ensures international accessibility across all countries.
